Yoon Suk Yeol said he will lift martial law order after the South Korean parliament passed a motion requiring it be lifted ASAP.
In South Korea’s biggest political crisis in decades, Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday night on 3 December during a televised address to thwart “anti-state forces” among his domestic political opponents. But outraged lawmakers unanimously rejected. Yonhap news agency said: the cabinet had agreed early on Wednesday to scrap the martial law.
South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party says it will begin “impeachment” proceedings against President Yoon if he doesn’t step down immediately.
Shortly after Yoon made his announcement, people began gathering outside the parliament building. Protesters outside the National Assembly parliament shouted and clapped. “We won!” they chanted and one demonstrator banged on a drum.
